There are significant indicators that are common to all virtual cases of domestic abuse, mainly because people have heard much about domestic abuse, but did not think it applied to their situation. Unfortunately, domestic violence is a worldwide epidemic, and is one of the most chronically underreported crimes. Your socioeconomic class, religion, race, or ethnic group, etc. does not have an influence on whether or not you become involved in the cycle of domestic abuse. Although there is no distinctive category at identifying who is at risk for domestic violence, there are some common situations among people who experience domestic violence, such as being abused as a child, witnessed domestic violence as a child, isolated socially from family and friends, physical or mental disability, unemployment, poverty or poor living situations, previously in an abusive relationship, simply planning to leave or has recently left an abusive situation, etc. The Bureau of Justice Statistics crime data brief reported that 85% of domestic abuse is women, and women of all races are about equally vulnerable to violence by an intimate partner. Allstate Foundation conducted a national poll on domestic abuse and reported that nearly three out of four (74%) of Americans personally knew someone who is or has been a victim of domestic violence. Competition between genders has been going on for as long as we have existed. What psychologists are trying to figure out is why this competition exists in the first place. I believe the reason that genders feel the need to compete against each other is actually really simple. They want to impress each other and be the better one. Males want to be the stronger, smarter, and more athletic ones. Females also want to be smarter and more athletic so that is where the competition occurs. We, as females, want males to be strong and protective of us but we don’t want them to know it. We want males to think of us as equals which makes us want to beat them in some sports and in school. This is difficult because no one wants to lose, especially males because they are expected to win. When men are younger their parents teach them to be strong and protect their women, I think this is a mistake because it is making it seem as though the males are the more dominant. The only reason I can think of for this happening was because males were built stronger and more muscular than females. However, this gave them no right to act as if they’re better than females. This competition exists even more today because females are becoming more equal to males. Nowadays woman can vote, run for office, run a company, and even go to war and it scares men so they work harder and try to prove they are better. As individuals, men feel as though they are the best and woman constantly have the need to one up every one. In a group, the competition is even bigger between others. Males want to be the most muscular and have the prettiest woman. Females want to be the prettiest, the smartest, and the most talented. I don’t necessarily think this competition will ever end, however, I do think males and females are equal just the same as white and black people are equal. We are all people and we should all respect one another.

A poem’s deeper meaning is rarely apparent on the surface. Poems, however small or large typically have an ambiguous message. The true beauty of a poem is that they are open for the interpretation. Ellen Hunnicutt, the author of the original â€Å"Blackberries,† inspired many others to write poems on the subject of blackberries. Similar to some extent, Robert Hass’, â€Å"Picking Blackberries with a Friend Who has Been Reading Jacques Lacan† and Seamus Haeney’s, â€Å"Blackberry-picking† share a variety of common ground. Both poems are literally similar as well as figuratively. Beginning with a literal comparison, the title. â€Å"Picking Blackberries†¦Ã¢â‚¬  and â€Å"Blackberry-picking† both used the action word of picking. This may come across as a minute similarity; however, it is not. â€Å"Picking† represents a memory of a past action or a past time. Although â€Å"Picking Blackberries with a Friend Who Has Been Reading Jacques Lacan† was written in present tense, Robert Hass is looking back to his past. Despite the drought, the â€Å"Juice gathers in the berries. † The drought can be seen as a dark or negative period in a person’s life. Juice still gathers in the berries and can be looked at as optimism. Regardless of the drought, the juice gathering in the berries is similar to there being â€Å"a light at the end of the tunnel. † It symbolizes hope and having something to look forward to throughout difficult times. The weather in â€Å" Blackberry-picking† can also be viewed as a reference to life. â€Å"Blackberry-picking† offers a dramatic change in weather conditions. Not only does â€Å"heavy rain and sun for a full week† signify the weather changes, but much more the Ups- and- Downs of life. Both poems recognize the struggles in everyday life. At this point both authors are optimistic. â€Å"Blackberry-picking† and â€Å"Picking Blackberries with a Friend Who Has Been Reading Jacques Lacan† are both set in August. August bears the end of the summer months, and symbolizes the middle years of one’s life. Although very different, each poem offers a sense of nostalgia. â€Å"Blackberry-Picking† by Seamus Haeney, is a more depressing poem in which the author submerges himself into his younger years when he would pick blackberries in late August. This poem ultimately illustrates the destruction of greed. The author explained hoarding fresh berries until one day â€Å"when the bath was filled, found a fur, a rat-grey fungus. † This represents the idea that nothing good lasts. No matter how much a person can obtain, nothing will stand the test of time (except diamonds). â€Å"Picking Blackberries with a Friend Who Has Been Reading Jacques Lacan,† is written in much better spirits. Robert Hass reminisces of picking blackberries in his youth while picking blackberries with his friend, Charlie. Charlie explains that picking blackberries reminds his of a joyous time during his childhood where his biggest worry was his stained tongue. Conversely, in â€Å"Blackberry-picking† was negative. It showed the stress of constant worry. The author had to worry about berries rotting and no matter how hard they tried; they could never keep their berries perfect. Also, no matter the weather, there were always sour blackberries. The poems, â€Å"Picking Blackberries with a Friend Who Has Been Reading Jacques Lacan† and â€Å"Blackberry-picking† have different tones. Although there are many similarities between the two poems, the underlining meanings are very different.
